19. Khil (Age 17)

Personal History: According to available records, Khil’s father died in a mining explosion while working at the Bhotekoshi project. His mother became mentally ill and unable to care for Khil and his two younger brothers and they were all placed at the Balmandir Orphanage. One brother remains at the orphanage, while his youngest brother, Shankar, is now sponsored by HCC. Khil after spends the long Dashain holiday at the orphanage with both brothers. Sometimes he goes to Kathmandu to visit and do farm work in his mother’s plot.

What makes me special?: Khil is very bright, hard working and a leader among the children at school. He is a good role model and watches over his brother and the younger children. His life ambition is to become a doctor so that he can open up a clinic in remote areas of the Himalayas and help others. He graduated at the top of his class at school, and scored high enough on his national tests that he is now studying pre-med at the National School of Sciences. In April 2009 his sponsor came to visit Nepal; he loved teaching her Nepalese and showing his “mayalu aama” (“loving mother”) the sites.
