Your generous contributions have made a positive impact on the Nepali children whom HCC directly supports.
Like the British school system, the HCC children take a standardized test after grade 10 to determine whether they are eligible to continue on to a college-prep track. If they pass, grades 11 and 12 prepare them for college entrance exams. The boarding school where they are currently enrolled does not keep students past grade 10. After grade 10, students take a 2 year college course in one of three areas: math/science, management or humanities. Upon completion, they can enroll in a 3 year college for their bachelors degree or a 5 year college to become a doctor or lawyer.
Life Skills Program
To provide for the special needs of our teens, we have created a new program, the Life Skills Program, which prepares them for life on their own after they leave school. Computer and internet proficiency is part of the training, along with enhanced English classes that provide them with enhanced professional skills. The program will teach them basic budgeting, cooking and cleaning, purchasing, and other skills important to life on their own.
In addition to the Life Skills Program, we have already started a College Fund. College tuition and board in Nepal is about $4,000US per child per year. Our Board of Advisors is currently busy creating ideas for fundraisers for these programs. Please contact us if you would be willing to host an event to raise funds for the Life Skills Program.
Group Home
Starting in March, 2010, HCC opened a group home in Kathmandu to house students that have completed grade 10 and are attending college. In this home, our students continue with their Life Skills training and are taking an active part in cooking, cleaning, shopping and caring for the home. There are also specific areas set established for studing since the work load in the college courses is greatly increased over their prior School. This home can house up to 14 students with house parents that act as guardians and mentors. Please see the Letters from our Students.
