Being a child in rural Nepal is fraught with challenges. Kids are often abandoned by destitute parents who cannot afford to support them. Even kids with families will often drop out of
school by the age of 8 to begin work to support themselves. Life isn't much better in the cities, where orphanages are overcrowded, underfunded and understaffed. Children are often left to beg on the
streets to feed themselves. Bruce Keenan had the opportunity to visit an orphanage in Kathmandu in 1999. What he saw there inspired him to get involved in helping orphaned children in Nepal. The Himalayan
Children's Charity was created to give these children an opportunity to enjoy their childhoods and for quality education. HCC was incorporated and received its 501c3 certification in 2000.
HCC works with Nepalese Children's Organization (NCO), a Nepali non-governmental institution with orphanages in various regions throughout the country. At these orphanages, we identify
children who are most in need and relocate them to English-medium boarding schools in Kathmandu. Here they live in safe environments, are clothed, fed, educated and cared for, have access to modern
healthcare, and gain core life values that would typically be taught by parents, such as self-esteem, ethics, integrity, respect, and personal responsibility. HCC has created a group home in Kathmandu
for children that have completed high school and are taking courses in local colleges. Our goal is to support our sponsored children until they become contributing members of the Nepalese society.
Join us in making a difference in the lives of these children. Help HCC to help them transform their present circumstances into futures of infinite possibilities.
